Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions I get most before, during and after a job, with care advice for acrylic fabric and stainless steel.
Before the quote
How does a quote work?
You contact me, we talk about your project, then I measure the boat. A detailed quote follows. Every step is on the page How a quote works.
What should I prepare for the measuring visit?
The boat just needs to be accessible and clear of anything lying around: bikes, fenders, cushions, ropes or any object on the area to be measured. If I need to plug in equipment, please provide access to power.
How far in advance should I contact you?
I book jobs in slots, up to a year in advance. The earlier you get in touch, the wider the choice of dates.
Do you work outside Saint-Jean-de-Losne?
I work at the port of Saint-Jean-de-Losne. For other ports, I reply on request, depending on distance and my diary.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Every piece is made to measure for your boat, so the statutory right of withdrawal does not apply. Any change after the quote is agreed is made by a written amendment stating the added work and its price. Full details are in the terms of sale (in French).
What happens at the end of the job?
Together we check that the piece matches the quote: dimensions, fabric, colour, finish. We sign a handover report. If you have a reservation, please state it in writing, precisely.
Caring for acrylic fabric
How often should I clean my fabric?
At least once a year. Some manufacturers recommend two light cleans, in spring and autumn.
How do I clean it?
- Choose a dry, windless day.
- Dust off or gently brush the fabric.
- Apply a mild soap (Marseille soap, black soap or washing-up liquid, diluted in hot water) and leave it for at least 10 minutes.
- Rub gently with a sponge or soft brush, especially on dirty areas.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water at low pressure until no foam is left.
- Let it dry completely before folding or storing it.
What should I avoid?
Pressure washers, stiff brushes, solvents (such as acetone), acids and abrasive products. Manufacturers disagree on bleach: some tolerate it as a last resort on a stubborn stain, others rule it out. If in doubt, contact me before treating a difficult stain.
How do I prevent mildew?
Acrylic fibre does not rot, but mildew can grow on dirt that builds up. Keep the fabric clean and taut to avoid pools of water, let it breathe, and never store it damp. If you must fold it damp, spread it out again as soon as possible, generally within 48 hours. Also avoid cooking under the fabric: greasy fumes soil it.
Does the fabric need re-proofing?
After a vigorous clean, or when water no longer beads, you can apply a proofing product suited to acrylic fabrics. Apply it to clean, dry fabric as a fine spray, in two crossed passes with about an hour of drying between them. The full effect appears after a few days, especially in warm, sunny weather.
Caring for stainless steel
How do I look after my stainless frame?
For routine care, fresh water and a mild soap are enough. Rinse regularly, then wipe dry.
I have rust marks on the stainless. What should I do?
They are usually surface stains. A paste cleaner based on an acid (citric, oxalic or phosphoric) removes them. Rinse very thoroughly: acids damage gelcoat and fabric, so protect them while cleaning. If rust keeps coming back, especially at a weld, have the frame checked: it can signal a weakness.
Which products should I avoid on stainless?
Chlorine cleaners such as bleach are highly corrosive to stainless steel. Also avoid scrubbing hard or polishing constantly: abrasion can encourage future corrosion.
Should I wax or coat stainless steel?
Waxes and protective products do not last long. Regular rinsing with fresh water does more to preserve the natural oxide layer that protects stainless steel.
Warranties
What warranties do I have on my piece?
As a consumer you have the statutory warranties: conformity for 2 years from delivery, and protection against hidden defects. Details are in article 9 of the terms of sale (in French).
Quality acrylic fabrics are also covered by their manufacturer, generally for 5 to 10 years depending on the fabric, against rotting and colour fading, provided they are cared for regularly.
What is not covered?
Damage caused by poor maintenance or harsh products, work done on the piece by a third party, or abnormal use. See article 10 of the terms of sale (in French).
Care advice based on guides published by acrylic-fabric manufacturers and by the specialist boating press. It does not replace the instructions for the fabric you choose.
